Introduction
These are the memories (and photos) I have from the Troop 31 Treks that I've been on (from 1995 to 2000). Treks are my favorite part of scouting, and are really cool. They are weeklong backpacking trips in the wilderness (so far, in California and Hawaii). Just look at the pictures.
1995 Trek: Kalalau Trail
|
- Day 1: Haena Beach to Hanakoa Camp
- Day 2: Hanakoa Camp to Kalalau Beach
- Day 3: Layover at Kalalau
- Day 4: Layover at Kalalau
- Day 5: Kalalau Beach to Hanakapai'i Beach
- Day 6: Hanakapai'i Beach to Haena Beach.
The 1995 Trek was my first trek, and it was relatively easy at 22 miles, but it is all very hilly (and on a side of a cliff). I repeated it later for the 1999 Trek. |

1996 Trek: Courtright Reservoir to Crabtree Lake
Rae Lake, our second night on the trail |
Crabtree Lake, our second layover night, is probably the coolest looking lake i've been to. |
- Day 1: Courtright Reservoir to Post Corral Meadows
- Day 2: Post Corral Meadows to Rae Lake
- Day 3: Rae Lake to Devil's Punchbowl
- Day 4: Day hike to Hell for Sure pass (11,280 ft)
- Day 5: Devil's Punchbowl over Devil's Col to Crabtree lake
- Day 6: Day hikes out of Crabtree lake
- Day 7: Crabtree lake to North Fork Kings River
- Day 8: North Fork Kings River to Courtright Reservoir
The 1996 Trek was my first 50 miler (although it took a day hike to do it), and it was my most favorite hike up to the 2000 trek. Crabtree Lake is very cool (although there are many things in the Sierras named Crabtree). |
1997 Trek: Medley Lake
A panorama from the top of a hill nearby Medley Lake. This is where we stayed three nights. Our camp is on the bottom-left of the photo. |
- Day 1: Lake Edison to West Fork Bear Creek
- Day 2: West Fork Bear Creek to Medley Lake
- Day 3: Day hikes out of Medley Lake
- Day 4: Day hikes out of Medley Lake
- Day 5: Medley Lake to Twin Falls
- Day 6: Twin Falls to Lake Edison
The 1997 Trek was the wimpiest of the Sierra Treks: only 30 miles, 6 days. |
1998 Trek: Emigrant Wilderness
This is where we camped on our layover day at Lake Letora |
We're having too much fun at the top of hills (translation for MIT people: high potential energy). |
- Day 1: Crabtree Camp to Piute Creek
- Day 2: Piute Creek to Buck Lake
- Day 3: Buck Lake to Letora Lake
- Day 4: Layover at Letora Lake
- Day 5: Letora Lake to the middle of nowhere
- Day 6: Middle of nowhere to Pine Valley
- Day 7: Pine Valley to Crabtree Camp
|
The 1998 trek was a normal High-Sierra Trek, except for two things: there were an amazing amount of mosquitos and the practice hike was harder than the trek. |
1999 Trek: Kalalau Trail
|
This was the second Kauai Trek I've been on, and I got to take some photos. Unfortunately, we were limited to only two nights (instead of three) on Kalalau Beach. |
- Day 1: Haena Beach to Hanakapai'i Beach
- Day 2: Hanakapai'i Beach to Kalalau Beach
- Day 3: Layover at Kalalau
- Day 4: Kalalau Beach to Hanakapai'i Beach
- Day 5: Hanakapai'i Beach to Haena Beach.

2000 Trek: Trans-Sierra Trek
This trek was the longest trek I've been on (70 miles, 11 days), and also debatably the coolest. Check out a Quicktime VR from the top of Kaweah Gap and Mount Whitney.
An extended description of this trek can be found here.
A view from Kaweah Gap, on the fourth day. Precipice Lake is at the bottom of the cliff in the middle of the photo. |
- Day 1: Crescent Meadow to Nine Mile Creek
- Day 2: Nine Mile Creek to Bearpaw Meadow
- Day 3: Bearpaw Meadow to Hamilton Lake
- Day 4: Hamilton Lake to Big Arroyo Trail Junction
- Day 5: Big Arroyo Trail Junction to Moraine Lake
- Day 6: Moraine Lake to Kern Hot Springs
- Day 7: Kern Hot Springs to Junction Meadow
- Day 8: Junction Meadow to Crabtree Meadow
- Day 9: Crabtree Meadow to Guitar Lake
- Day 10: Guitar Lake to Outpost Camp,
including climb of Mt. Whitney
- Day 11: Outpost Camp to Whitney Portal
|
2002 Trek: Crabtree Lake
A panorama over King's Canyon during our day hike. Lake Confusion is on the right (its outlets flow both directions over the LeConte Divide). The river down the canyon is the San Joaquin at its start!
- Day 1: Courtright Reservoir to Post Corral Meadows
- Day 2: Post Corral Meadows to Devil's Punchbowl
- Day 3: Devil's Punchbowl over Devil's Col to Crabtree Lake
- Day 4: Day hikes out of Crabtree lake
- Day 5: Crabtree lake to North Fork Kings River
- Day 6: North Fork Kings River to Courtright Reservoir
The 2002 Trek was a shortened version of the 1996 trek, but this time had more scouts. We cut a few days off (we did some cross-country to avoid the area around Rae Lake, and didn't do the Hell-for-sure Pass day hike), but did a longer day hike out of Crabtree -- almost made it to Lake Confusion. The last day we hiked 10 miles to the trailhead before noon (well, except for Bill).
Half Dome
|
The Half Dome trip is not a Trek, but it's cool enough to be on this page. Check out the QTVR Panorama from the top! |
